Highlights
A mainstay among the elite Division I athletic programs, Duke University once again ranked near the top during the 2006-07 athletic year. The women’s golf team collected its fifth NCAA Championship with a 15-stroke victory in Daytona Beach, Florida, while the field hockey, women’s lacrosse, and men’s lacrosse squads advanced to the NCAA Final Four.
The Blue Devils registered three Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) tournament titles and five ACC regular season titles in the year. The Duke women’s golf, men’s soccer, and men’s lacrosse teams each garnered tournament crowns, while the volleyball, women’s basketball, women’s lacrosse (tie), men’s soccer, and men’s lacrosse teams registered ACC league regular season titles.
Duke was also successful nationally in 2006-07 as 15 teams competed in NCAA Tournament action. The Blue Devils had five teams finish in the top 10 of the national rankings.
Awards and recognition
Shannon Rowbury became the first Blue Devil women’s track & field member to claim NCAA Champion honors as she ran a 4:42.17 mile at the NCAA Indoor Championship.
The Blue Devils had three National Player of the Year honorees (Amanda Blumenherst, Matt Danowski, and Lindsey Harding), one National Defensive Player of the Year (Harding), one Rhodes Scholar (Chas Salmen), and one Lowe’s Senior Class Award winner (Alison Bales).
Dan Brooks (women’s golf) and Gail Goestenkors (women’s basketball) were each named National Coach of the Year, while Mike Krzyzewski (men’s basketball) earned USA Basketball National Coach of the Year.
Fifteen Blue Devils were selected as Academic All-America/National Scholar Athletes.
A total of 30 student-athletes were selected All-America during the season, while seven were honorable mention and three were Freshmen All-America honorees.
Faculty and staff appointments
Director of Athletics Joe Alleva was reappointed.
Jon Jackson and Brad Berndt were named associate directors of athletics.
Joanne P. McCallie was named women’s basketball coach.
John Danowski was named head coach of the men's lacrosse team.
Al Brown and Samantha Williams were named assistant women’s basketball coaches.
O.D. Vincent was named men’s golf coach.
Kelly McCann was named assistant women’s tennis coach.
Ryan Ressa was named assistant men’s golf coach.
Ron Caputo was named assistant men’s lacrosse coach.
John Gutekunst, Danny Pearman, and Peter Vaas were named assistant football coaches.
Major gifts
For the second year in a row, the athletics department had a record year in fund-raising support, raising over $25 million in the 2007 fiscal year. The university completed fund-raising for the Michael W. Krzyzewski Center, now under construction, and received significant support for athletic scholarships through the Iron Dukes and various endowments.
